Beyond Human Space
An aquatic civilization hailing from the shallow ocean world of Gosoto. They eschew government in the traditional sense completely, emphasizing freedom of movement and association. The important Jasophoran organizations are instead the hypercorps, massive business interests that compete to control the most galactic resources. Each hypercorp is as powerful as a small Empire, and even more powerful if you count the power inherent in threatening theoretically larger powers with being cut off from their services and trade network. The Gosoto Stock Exchange is the most important service of its kind in the Galaxy.
Jasophorans look like man-sized octopuses with vicious barbs instead of suckers on their tentacles. Although they can communicate through sound, it is more common for their language to be displayed visually by creating patterns on their colour-changing skin. They are, thus, the only known species to have developed written language before spoken one.
The Jasophorans get on particularly well with Humans, since they consider the latter as sharing an important respect for personal liberty and free enterprise.
